School Social Work Services

At Benjamin Franklin School, our School Social Workers play an essential role in supporting the academic success, emotional well-being, and social development of our students. We understand that challenges outside the classroom can impact a student’s ability to learn and thrive. Our social workers work closely with students, families, teachers, and community partners to address barriers to learning and ensure that every student has the support needed to succeed.

School social workers serve as advocates, counselors, and connectors to resources, helping students develop the skills necessary to navigate academic, social, emotional, and personal challenges. They are dedicated to fostering a safe, supportive, and inclusive school environment where all students feel valued and empowered.

Roles of School Social Workers

School social workers at Benjamin Franklin School provide a variety of services, including:

  • Individual and small-group counseling for students experiencing social, emotional, behavioral, or family-related challenges.
  • Crisis intervention and support during difficult situations affecting students and families.
  • Attendance monitoring and intervention to promote regular school attendance and engagement.
  • Collaboration with teachers and staff to develop strategies that support student success.
  • Family outreach and engagement to strengthen home-school partnerships.
  • Connecting families with community resources such as housing assistance, healthcare services, food programs, mental health services, and other support agencies.
  • Supporting students experiencing homelessness, family transitions, grief, trauma, or other life challenges.
  • Participating in student support teams, intervention planning, and special education processes when appropriate.
  • Promoting positive behavior, conflict resolution, self-advocacy, and social-emotional learning.

How Students Benefit

Students benefit from school social work services by receiving support that addresses both academic and non-academic factors that may affect learning. Through counseling, mentorship, and intervention services, students develop coping skills, emotional resilience, problem-solving abilities, and positive social relationships. Social workers help students overcome barriers that may interfere with attendance, engagement, behavior, and academic achievement.

By connecting families to valuable community resources and providing ongoing support, school social workers help create stable conditions that allow students to focus on learning and personal growth. Students who receive social work services often experience improved attendance, stronger social-emotional skills, increased self-confidence, and greater success in school.

Supporting Students, Families, and the School Community

At Benjamin Franklin School, our social workers are key members of our student support team. They work collaboratively with families, educators, and community organizations to ensure that students receive comprehensive support tailored to their individual needs. Through advocacy, counseling, intervention, and resource coordination, our school social workers help create a caring and supportive environment where every student can learn, grow, and thrive.
