Guidiance and Counselling

At Benjamin Franklin School, we believe that students achieve their highest potential when their academic, social, emotional, and career development needs are supported. Our Guidance and Counseling Program is designed to help students navigate the challenges of school, build positive relationships, develop self-confidence, and prepare for future success. Through a comprehensive counseling program, our counselors work collaboratively with students, families, teachers, administrators, and community partners to ensure that every student receives the support necessary to thrive.

Our school counselors provide proactive and responsive services that promote student achievement, personal growth, and social-emotional well-being. Counseling services are available to all students and are tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual learner.

Roles of School Counselors

The school counseling team at Benjamin Franklin School provides a wide range of services, including:

  • Academic planning and goal setting to help students achieve success in the classroom.
  • Individual and small-group counseling focused on social-emotional development, conflict resolution, self-esteem, and decision-making skills.
  • Classroom guidance lessons that teach character development, leadership, study skills, organization, and responsible citizenship.
  • Support for students experiencing personal, family, social, or emotional challenges.
  • Crisis intervention and short-term counseling services when students face difficult situations.
  • Collaboration with teachers and support staff to identify and address barriers to learning.
  • Assisting students with transitions between grade levels and preparation for high school.
  • Monitoring academic progress, attendance, and behavior to identify students who may need additional support.
  • Coordinating student support services and referrals to community agencies when appropriate.
  • Partnering with families to support student success both at school and at home.

Academic Support and Student Success

School counselors play an important role in helping students develop strong study habits, organizational skills, time-management strategies, and goal-setting practices. Through ongoing progress monitoring and collaboration with teachers, counselors help students overcome academic challenges and develop the confidence needed to succeed. Counselors also assist students in understanding their strengths, interests, and future educational opportunities.

Social-Emotional Learning and Well-Being

At Benjamin Franklin School, social-emotional learning is an important part of student development. Counselors help students build skills in self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship building, and emotional regulation. Through individual counseling, group sessions, and classroom guidance activities, students learn strategies to manage stress, resolve conflicts peacefully, and develop healthy relationships with peers and adults.

College, Career, and Future Readiness

Our counseling program encourages students to begin thinking about their future goals and aspirations. Counselors expose students to career exploration opportunities, leadership development activities, and high school readiness planning. By helping students connect their interests and talents to future educational and career pathways, counselors empower students to make informed decisions about their future.

Benefits to Students

Students who participate in guidance and counseling services benefit from:

  • Improved academic performance and engagement.
  • Increased self-confidence and self-awareness.
  • Stronger social and communication skills.
  • Better attendance and school participation.
  • Enhanced problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Improved emotional regulation and coping skills.
  • Greater readiness for high school and future career opportunities.
  • Stronger connections between school, family, and community resources.

A Commitment to the Whole Child

At Benjamin Franklin School, guidance and counseling services are an essential component of our commitment to educating the whole child. By supporting students academically, socially, emotionally, and developmentally, our counselors help create a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where every student is empowered to succeed and reach their full potential.
