There is an old volunteering expression that says: “If you are feeling disconnected from what is taking place, you probably are.”
In other words, volunteers know that the key to changing the world around you is to get involved and stay involved. Your children deserve the very best- you. The child you serve may be your own!
Get Involved- Stay Involved- It’s the best way to know what is happening in your child’s education.
Parent Teacher Organization
Every family is invited to join the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). Throughout the year, the PTO supports many activities for our children. Some activities include school dances, Reindeer Games, movie night, and the Scholastic Book Fair. Your vote, and more importantly to the community in which we serve- your model of good citizenship, counts. You set the example for our students to see, respect and follow.
Student Engagement Council
The Student Engagement Council (SEC) is a great way to serve and stay on top of any changes or events that happen at the district, school or even classroom level. In the SEC, your active participation helps our students appreciate and understand how to problem solve, share responsibilities, collaborate on ideas, and work on challenges that are larger than any one person.
Fundraising Basics
Don’t forget the basics: Families are still encouraged to collect Box Tops and participate in any other fundraising programs our school does. Envelopes or flyers will come home with your child(ren) that give you more information about each particular fundraiser. These program bring needed funding and supplies to the classrooms. Please contact our parent coordinator, Amanda Sobie, for more information.
Be a Coach/Leader
We are always looking for parents to coach our afterschool sports or to lead an afterschool club. Contact sports coordinator, Amanda Sobie, if you are interested in coaching or leading a new club.
Classroom Assistance/Volunteering
Walt Whitman School understands the connection between family support and student success; therefore, we are committed to involving families in their child’s education. Parents and guardians are encouraged to come to Whitman and assist teachers in their classrooms. This allows children to combine support from home with support at school, making for positive results.
We have very active parent volunteers. We are always looking for more caring, motivated individuals to work with our students. Please contact our parent coordinator, Amanda Sobie, at [email protected] to learn more about how you can help in the classroom.
