Extracurricular Activities

Barack Obama/SCTE is home to plenty of wonderful organizations, clubs and teams that offer students exciting opportunities to extend their day at school and put their boundless energy into enriching activities. The following extracurricular programs focus on building students’ social skills and confidence to develop new talents. These opportunities also give students a chance to build relationships with their classmates and teachers as well as the surrounding community.

Barack Obama School of Career & Technical Education offers the following extracurricular programs:

  • Reading Club – Barack Obama strongly encourages students to read outside of the classroom. The Reading Club affirms reading by sharing book reports, discussing different kinds of books and improving literacy and comprehension skills. Students explore different genres, authors and literary themes that will increase their interest in recreational reading.
  • Basketball – Barack Obama’s Basketball program is a great way for students to relieve stress, work as a team and improve their athletic abilities. But most importantly, it’s a great way for students to have fun. Our coaches build participants’ skills and knowledge while strengthening player stamina and cooperation.
  • Playground Pals – Students at Barack Obama have the opportunity to become Playground Pals during recess. Working with the recess monitor, Playground Pals look out for younger students, participate in playground games and activities and build relationships with their peers.
  • Recess Monitors – The Recess Monitors program strengthens student responsibility. Monitors are a great asset to Barack Obama students and the community at large, as they look out for the safety and well-being of their peers.
  • BOSCTE Leadership Club – It is a foremost priority of Barack Obama to instill leadership skills and values within our students. This is done in part through the Barack Obama Leadership Club. Students are trained to be leaders and mediators amongst their peers and entire school community. They work directly with school administration on a variety of projects and activities.
  • Lunch Buddies – Students at Barack Obama have the fun chance to become Lunch Buddies. Lunch Buddies is a fine program for students to strengthen and develop social skills that will prove essential throughout life. Working with the lunchroom monitor, students assist with a variety of cafeteria duties.
  • Student Council – Barack Obama has Student Council representatives who are voted into office by their peers. They represent student input on special projects, events and fundraisers. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn skills and assume a leadership role while working with teachers and administrators in the school environment.
  • Pen Pal Club – The pen pal club is open to female students in grades 6-8. The program offers social education with a focus on positive decision-making skills. Participants develop relationships with an adult mentor who provides support, guidance and affirmation throughout the year.
  • Homework First Club –  This is done in part by the homework first teachers to instill the values and goals of completing homework assignments in order for students to strengthen their skills and knowledge in the content area of study.
