Accelerated Reading Program

Honey Creek is very proud of our Accelerated Reading Program. This reading program combines our computers with reading. Our CP2 through CP5 students participate (CP1 students typically will begin the program their second semester).  Here is how the Accelerated Reading Program works…

  1. We have access to over 185,000 book titles. Most popular children’s literature will have an Accelerated Reading quiz available.   All Accelerated Reading Books at Honey Creek School have been identified with a green label.
  2. Your child can obtain most of these books from local library, Honey Creek’s library, his/her classroom library, bookstore, or perhaps borrow from a friend.
  3. Your child should carefully read the book at home or at school.
  4. When he/she has successfully completed the book, your child can take a 3-20 question multiple choice comprehension test. Your child’s teacher will allow them to take AR quizzes on their computer device at appropriate times during the school day.
  5. Students may NOT retake a test on a book title, so they must be very prepared the first time they take the test.
  6. The computer will score the test; based on the correct answers, the student will be awarded points.
  7. The points accumulated can then be used by the students to periodically obtain prizes by “cashing” in their points at the Honey Creek Accelerated Reading Store (our store is open one Tuesday each month from 1:00-2:00pm).
  8. Events are held periodically throughout the school year to encourage students to meet reading goals.  Students must pass a pre-determined number of quizzes during a set time-frame to attend these events. Examples are Ice Cream Sandwich Party, Root Beer Float Party, and a Spring Picnic.
  9. Each month Ms. Biesterveld sets a point goal. September’s goal is 12 points, October’s is 25 points, etc.  If students’ meet these goals they can attend the AR Goals Lunch held at the end of each month, and receive a special treat.  These monthly goals help the students stay on track to earn 100 points for the year and become a member of the “AR 100 Point Club”,  this entitles them to attend a Special Lunch with the Principal in June.

We have received many prizes for this reading program from our fund raisers, local businesses such as Rocky Rococo, Discount Liquor, AMF Bowling Center, Burger King and our PAC.  We need your help in obtaining more prizes for this worthwhile program.  We will accept donations; monetary or otherwise.  Perhaps your employer or someone you know would be willing to donate items we could use as incentive prizes.  If you have any questions about how our program works, or your child’s participation in it, please contact your child’s teacher at 604-7900.  We are in need of parent volunteers to help in setting up our Accelerated Reading Store the second Tuesday of each month from 1:00-2:00. Contact Pat Larsen at 414-477-5662 if you can spare 2 hours each month.

If you would like to view your child’s progress in this program you can log in to the AR Home Connect Website: https://global-zone08.renaissance-go.com/studentprogress/homeconnect.  (Renaissance ID: MPS-08TI).  User name and password are your child’s student ID (no “s”) and birth date (mm/dd/yy).

You can determine whether a quiz exists for a particular book by going to: https://www.arbookfind.com.  If a quiz is found your child will be able to take that quiz at Honey Creek.

Reading is fundamental to our children’s education.  Please encourage your child to use this wonderful program to increase their reading skills.
