Neeskara is proud to be one of the few schools in the district to offer the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Program. The program is an auditory/oral program, which differentiates it from a sign language program.
Auditory/Oral Program
This portion of the DHH program provides children who are deaf and hard of hearing with instruction that strives to enhance their hearing through oral and visual cues.
Auditory Training
The Auditory Training program provides students with individual training that focuses on using only their hearing to gain information without visual cues such as speech, reading, visual images or pictures. This instruction is provided in a soundproof booth to maximize the effectiveness of the training.
Neeskara supports an inclusive learning approach in all classrooms. Students with hearing challenges are welcomed and valued as an important part of the school community. Classrooms are equipped with special FM and sound field systems to provide for maximum sound amplification. These systems, in conjunction with each child’s personal hearing aids, allow students to participate in the daily teaching and learning in Neeskara classrooms.
In addition to the DHH Program, Neeskara offers a Special Education program for students from ages 3-12. Special Education services follow the academic guidelines as outlined in a student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP), which is aligned to state and federal standards.
For more information about the Neeskara Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program or the Special Education services available, please contact the school office at (414) 256-8600. We encourage families to tour our school, visit classrooms and see the DHH sound system in action.
