It is a known fact that children achieve more success in school when parents take an active role in the school!
Parents are encouraged to visit the school as often as they can and, as a school partner, participate in as many areas as possible. While we want you to visit often, it is very important that you please stop in the office first and sign in. A visitor’s badge will be given to you in the office. This is asked of all visitors, as a measure of safety, and to sustain a safe environment for all of our children.
Also remember, a conference can be scheduled with your child’s teacher by placing a call to our school office.
Please take some time to read further about the numerous ways you can become actively involved at Neeskara Elementary School.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-Teacher conferences are held in fall and spring usually in the evening. Although these conferences are scheduled so that specific times are set aside for conferencing to take place during the school year, a conference can be requested at any time during the year.
School Climate Survey
The MPS School Climate Survey, taken online, lets us know what you think, and assists us in our future planning. Parents are asked to offer their comments regarding various school activities.
Title I District Advisory Council
This council serves as an additional channel through which parents in the Milwaukee Public Schools can share their ideas on the needs of children, assist in the planning and operation of the Title I programs for children, and participate in evaluating the success of Title I efforts. The council meets at the Administration Building, 5225 W. Vliet Street, on the first Thursday of each month from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. Title I Conferences for parents are held during the year. Attendance is funded by the Neeskara Title I Involvement budget.
Field Trip Chaperone
When your child brings home a notice about a field trip, you are also given an opportunity to sign up to volunteer and join your child’s classroom on the field trip. The students like meeting their friend’s family, and the teachers are grateful for the help. The trips are really fun! Give it a try.
Reading Volunteer
Volunteers are welcome at any time to read to children, whether to an individual child or to a group. This can occur in your child’s classroom or any classroom within the building. We want you to feel prepared, and if you contact the school office, we’ll provide you with a training session which includes the “how to” and the materials.
School Engagement Council
The council has been established through a Milwaukee School Board policy, and is composed of seven parents, four staff members, one community representative, and the school principal. Parents are elected to the Council in May for the following year.
The School Engagement Council’s purpose and responsibilities include:
- To be a place where school issues can be discussed.
- To be a clearinghouse for information that is important to Neeskara parents, teachers, students, and the community.
- To help build the annual school educational plan and budget.
- To create and lead projects that support our school’s educational plan.
The meeting dates and times for this school year can be found in our School Newsletter, or by simply calling the school at 256-8600.
Fall Open House
In the fall of the year, families are invited to attend our Open House. During this evening event, staff members are introduced, classrooms are open and teachers provide information on grade level standards and expectations. Our students are always eager for families to become better acquainted with their teacher and their school environment.
Book Fair
The Book Fair is held twice yearly and coincides with our Parent-Teacher Conference weeks. What a great opportunity to provide your child with quality reading materials. There are old favorites as well as new titles to peak interest. Each child is given a preview brochure listing many of the books available. Plan to visit the Book Fair and perhaps make a special purchase with your child.
General Mills “Box Tops for Education”

Products such as cereal, yogurt, granola bars, Fruit by the Foot, Fruit Roll-ups, Betty Crocker baking mixes, as well as other items, have sections that can be sent.
