MPS is excited to present its first-ever poetry slam! All kindergarten through 12th grade learners are invited
to submit an original poem or short piece of writing for publication and/or presentation at the first annual
Milwaukee Public Schools Poetry Slam. PDFs or recorded submissions are due by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday,
March 8, 2023. Selected participants, teachers, and/or administrators will be notified by Monday, March
13, 2023. Five students will be selected from each of the following grade bands: K–2, 3–5, 6–8, and 9–12.
Students will have between one and two minutes to read their poem or short piece of writing.
Location: Milwaukee Public Schools Central Services Auditorium
Time: 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.

The poems will be evaluated based on the following traits:
• Ideas
• Organization
• Word choice
• Voice
• Conventions
