Community Service

At WCLL, community service is highly valued. Students are expected to use their time, talent and energy to give back to their community. By promoting community service, WCLL promotes humility, compassion for others and real world learning experiences out of the classroom. Volunteering is an important aspect of students’ academic, career and personal/social development. WCLL’s Student Support Personnel Team (SSPT) organizes community service projects for students and encourages community members to volunteer at the school. Prospective volunteers may contact Aimee Harris at (414) 304-6827 or e-mail her at [email protected]. Opportunities include, but are not limited to:

School Volunteers

If you would like to be a volunteer in our school, we have numerous opportunities available!  Come take part in class activities, and group projects, assist with reading, and guest speak about your job, your service, and your experience! Or, if you would like, work from home with cutting and collating. Each opportunity reaps incredible rewards! For more information, registration forms which would include a background check, and a list of current opportunities available, go to mpsmke.com/volunteer.

Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS)

DIBELS trains parents and community volunteers to deliver early reading interventions to students in K5 – grade 2. Research shows that reading ability and confidence in a child’s beginning years positively impacts performance in all academic areas.

Wisconsin Reading Corps | Changing the world, one reader at a time.
A Proven Approach. Children who are strong readers by the end of third grade are positioned to be strong learners for the rest of their lives. By combining the people power of AmeriCorps with leading-edge literacy research, Wisconsin Reading Corps helps make sure every student in the state is ready to learn.

AIDS Walk

Organized by the SSPT, students, faculty and families are encouraged to raise money for and participate in an annual AIDS Walk.

Coats for Kids

Students, faculty and families provided for those in need by donating new, gently used and used coats.

Mili-Kits

Grade 4 students at WCLL learn about troops from Wisconsin and where they are stationed. The SSPT coordinated and sent out care packages to those troops.

Recycling Project

Grade 5 classes at WCLL partner with local police and fire departments to complete a recycling service project. Students learn about the process of recycling and what can be reduced, reused and/or recycled.

Environmental Project

By participating in WCLL’s environmental project, students serve as volunteers at Rocky Mountain National Park and participate in an experiential education program. Students then share their experiences with other WCLL students.

Career Day

The SSPT arranges for local business owners to discuss career options with WCLL students and share the steps they took to get to their current positions.

Habitat for Humanity and Rebuilding Together – Greater Milwaukee Home Repair Project

These projects allow students to go into the community and help improve the home of residents in need. Students are asked to complete simple renovation tasks under the guidance of a skilled supervisor.
