Seventh grade students partner up with Third grade students to focus on Literacy strands from the Common Core State Standards. The older students develop text dependent questions based on the younger students’ stories from the Houghton/Mifflin textbooks. The Seventh graders earn a grade for their ability to develop “Right There” and “Think and Search” questions and the younger students earn a grade for their ability to answer the questions using evidence from the text.
The students also use interpersonal communication as they read to each other during a half hour block of time. The seventh grades practice fluency, expression, and other aspects of adding voice to their read aloud, while the third graders practice basic reading skills, such as pronunciation, fluency, and practicing adding voice.
All students are engaged and benefit from their Book Buddy time!
