School Hours

9:10 AM-4:10 PM– Scholars who are dropped off may arrive no earlier than 9:00 a.m.-there is no supervision prior to 9:00 a.m. All scholars who are dropped off or who walk to school will enter through the main entrance on 1st Street.  Any arrival after 9:35 requires a tardy slip from the office.

If you may need an earlier arrival time or after school care, please enroll in the Boys and Girls CLC program by contacting Mr. Colbert, CLC director, at 267-0527 for hours of operation.

School is over at 4:10 pm. If you pick up your children from school, please be on time.

Attendance and Tardiness

When absences or tardies occur, you should notify the attendance secretary, Ms. Hicks at 414 267-0510. A tardy occurs after 9:35 a.m. Minutes from all tardies accumulate per minute.  If an absence is not called in to the secretary your child will be marked as unexcused.  After 5 unexcused absences a truancy letter will be sent to you regarding absences, which could lead to a DA referral resulting in a possible truancy ticket.  If you are experiencing a hardship, please reach out to the school.  We strive for scholars to miss no more than 10 days throughout the school year.  Each scholar is allotted 10 excused AB if needed.  Anything outside of the 10 days will need approval from the principal.  One of the goals this year is to increase school-wide attendance and to do that we need your help by sending your child to school each day.  We gladly welcome scholars throughout the day when your child has an appointment, missed the bus or overslept.

Carver Uniform Policy

Carver Academy strives to maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning and academic excellence. Uniforms are to be worn every day, from the first day of the school year.

  • Navy Blue Pants: scholars may wear blue skorts, skirts, shorts, pants or navy jumpers (JEANS ARE NOT ALLOWED)
  • Navy or black belt-simple belt and buckle
  • No outerwear including sweatshirts with hoods are allowed in the classroom (No Hoodies in the classroom)

Cell Phones/Smart watches/Ear buds/ Headphones/Smart Glasses (unless prescription)

Cell phone/Smartwatch/Earbud/Headphones/Smart glasses (unless prescription) use of any kind by scholars is not allowed in Milwaukee Public Schools.

Carver’s policy is as follows:

  • Teachers will collect the cellphones/smartwatch/earbuds each morning and return the phone at the end of each school day.
  • Classroom phones will be utilized during the school day for any communication.

If a scholar does not turn in or uses any of the above electronics during school hours the item will be confiscated, and a parent/guardian will need to pick up the item.  Please help enforce this policy as well as guiding your child on appropriate social media/messaging use.  The number one cause of arguments/fights and disturbances stems from inappropriate use of social media/messaging.

Water Bottles

Only Plastic see-through water bottles are allowed for student use

Breakfast and Lunch

MPS is proud to offer free breakfast and lunch that follow USDA guidelines to every student in the district on school days. We encourage all students to participate in the meal program. Breakfast is served from 9:10 a.m. – 9:35 a.m. We encourage all to participate in the lunch program.  If a school lunch is selected no additional snacks, chips etc. may be brought to lunch. Cold lunches should include healthy choices and enough only for the individual bringing the cold lunch- no large bags of chips or large bags of candy, no soda, energy drinks or glass bottles.

Outside orders are not allowed during the school day- McDonalds-or any fast food, Uber Eats, Doordash etc.

For more information, watch the MPS Nutrition Services webpage for updates.

Visitor Policy

The safety of students, staff, and visitors is a top priority.  All business will be done in the main office or an office in the vicinity.  A family member may visit the classroom by appointment to minimally disrupt instructional time.  Please expect the following procedures:

  • Parent drop off takes place at the front door unless an office visit is necessary
  • Expect to be screened at the front door- share who you are and why you are there
  • Report to the office before going anywhere else
  • Show ID and sign log
  • Refrain from cell phone use while in the office
  • Anything outside of the office needs an escort by a staff member
  • Classroom visits are by appointment only and should occur outside of the instructional day
  • Visitor pass must be worn

Dismissal/Pick Up Policy

Many scholars will utilize the school bus and be released to the bus by staff.  The scholars who are picked up by daycare or parent pickup will utilize the CLC door on 1st street beginning at 4:05 p.m. Please wait in your vehicle for a staff member to take your name and call for your child to report outside.  There are certain situations that require early pickup which will be allowed at the office until 3:50 PM. The office is closed for pickup from 3:50-4:20. Please plan accordingly. If a change needs to be made to your child’s pickup on a certain day, please communicate that information with the office or the classroom teacher early in the day.  A message after 3:00 p.m. cannot be guaranteed to reach the child.  If a note or phone call does not occur the child will follow their on-file dismissal procedure.

Updated Phone Numbers/Address

Please make sure to update any new phone number, contact, and/or address. Please call the office to provide this information. All families must have a working phone number on file.

Bus

Bus routes are created based on the address in Infinite Campus. If you have moved, please call the office to update the address. Once an address is updated it takes 24 hours to register in the system. After this time, it will take up to 5 business days to update a new bus route for the family. It is the family’s responsibility to provide transportation during this time. Please call the school to get that information updated.  More information is available on the MPS transportation webpage. Appropriate behavior on the bus is expected by all scholars riding the bus. The following expectations will be enforced:

  • Remain Seated at all times
  • All body parts must be inside the bus (no opening windows or hanging out of windows)
  • Appropriate language only
  • Hands, feet, and objects remain to self
  • Respect directions from the bus driver

Transportation is a privilege and can be suspended if scholars violate the rules. If you have concerns with behaviors on the bus please reach out to Ms. Hess, the assistant principal at 414-267-0506.
