{"id":4816,"date":"2024-07-15T16:52:05","date_gmt":"2024-07-15T16:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mpsschoolwebsi.wpenginepowered.com\/obama\/?page_id=4816"},"modified":"2026-01-28T15:15:48","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T15:15:48","slug":"volunteer","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/k12.mps.school\/obama\/volunteer\/","title":{"rendered":"Volunteer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Barack Obama School of Career and Technical Education!<\/p>\n<p>We are always looking for caring, motivated individuals to work with our students.\u00a0Volunteers are a wonderful supplement to the educational experience of children in Milwaukee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is a short sampling of Volunteer Opportunities that are in the highest demand at Obama SCTE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Academic Tutor \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0work closely with a classroom teacher, working one-to-one with a student of in small groups.<\/li>\n<li><strong>General Classroom Help \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0work with an assigned classroom teacher\u00a0during the school day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>CTE Professional Presenters \u2013<\/strong> present on CTE\/STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Math) topics or careers to a class, on a one-time or on-going basis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>College and Career Presenters\/Mentors \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0present on an array of college and career topics, along with assisting students in completing resumes, college applications, scholarship essays, etc on a one-time or on-going basis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Volunteers are typically asked to commit to a minimum of serving one hour per week for the academic year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to become\u00a0a Volunteer:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Choose a Time or a Program<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider what type of volunteer service you would like to contribute, how often you would like to volunteer, and how much time you would like to spend each day you are at Obama SCTE.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Contact Obama SCTE or the Program<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>If you know which specific program you would like to volunteer for at Obama SCTE, please contact Kiara Knox at 414-393-5093 or email <a href=\"mailto:knoxk@milwaukee.k12.wi.us\">knoxk@milwaukee.k12.wi.us<\/a>. If you do not know where you would like to volunteer, contact the district\u2019s Volunteer Coordinator, Heather Aschoff, at (414) 773-9823 or <a href=\"mailto:aschofha@milwaukee.k12.wi.us\">aschofha@milwaukee.k12.wi.us<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Complete the Application<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>You must complete a <a href=\"https:\/\/mpsmke.com\/mpsvolapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">volunteer application<\/a> before volunteering. If you have already identified that you would like to volunteer at Obama SCTE, please return the completed form to the school. If you don\u2019t know where you would like to volunteer, return the completed form to the district\u2019s Volunteer Coordinator.<\/li>\n<li>The volunteer application collects basic contact information as well as some specific details so we can find a suitable volunteer opportunity for you. Criminal background checks are conducted on all applicants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Confirm Role, Schedule, and Expectations<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>You should hear back about your application status within a month. If you have not received a reply, please follow up with the school or the district\u2019s Volunteer Coordinator.<\/li>\n<li>Once you are approved, meet with the teacher or other school staff member you will be working with.
