{"id":17,"date":"2011-11-04T20:18:44","date_gmt":"2011-11-04T20:18:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www5.milwaukee.k12.wi.us\/school\/macl\/?page_id=17"},"modified":"2026-01-27T20:36:05","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T20:36:05","slug":"academics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/k12.mps.school\/macl\/programs\/academics\/","title":{"rendered":"Academics"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Reading<\/h2>\n<p>In 2021, Milwaukee Public Schools adopted a new Reading curriculum for elementary and middle school.\u00a0 Into Reading and Into Literature (by HMH)\u00a0uses a balanced approach to literacy instruction and supports teachers in building a culture of learning.\u00a0This contemporary curriculum includes both student workbooks and a multitude of online resources.\u00a0Through culturally responsive lessons, readings, and activities, students grow in reading fluency and comprehension.\u00a0Check out some additional reading resources, as well as your Student Toolbox (through Clever) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpl.org\/\">Milwaukee Public Library<\/a> system.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.storylineonline.net\/\">storylineonline.net<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uniteforliteracy.com\/\">http:\/\/www.uniteforliteracy.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Language Arts<\/h2>\n<p>The English Language Arts\u00a0curriculum\u00a0focuses on language proficiency, speaking, and writing skills.\u00a0Teachers use the Six Traits of Writing program to assess specific strengths and\u00a0areas for growth in student writing, and plan instruction accordingly. Students are provided with timely and effective feedback that allows them to improve their writing using revision and editing strategies. Students are also encouraged to become accurate and precise speakers, enhancing their communication skills through the sharing of written works, the explanation of projects, and various public speaking opportunities.<\/p>\n<h2>Science<\/h2>\n<p>Milwaukee Public Schools adopted a new Science curriculum in 2021.\u00a0Science Dimensions (by HMH) delivers real-world science experiences with rich media and digital interaction.\u00a0Using an authentic approach to Science, this curriculum inspires students to excel in STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.\u00a0Hands-on activities are implemented throughout the curriculum in various labs and experiments.<\/p>\n<h2>Mathematics<\/h2>\n<p>The mathematical skills students receive at MACL enable\u00a0them to think critically and to apply skills they have learned to practical, real-world situations. Math Expressions is used to align our instruction to meet the Common Core State Standards.\u00a0It is an effective, highly interactive mathematics program for use in grades K-5.\u00a0Through this program, students learn to compute, solve problems, and think mathematically.\u00a0Common Core State Standards in middle school (grades 6-8) are met by using the Glencoe series.\u00a0 Math is supplemented by additional curricular and intervention programs, including i-Ready, ST Math, and Khan Academy.<\/p>\n<h2>Social Studies<\/h2>\n<p>With a special focus on the Southeast Asian culture, MACL\u2019s social studies curriculum includes geography, history, civics, economics, political science, and behavioral science.\u00a0Milwaukee Public Schools is in the process of adopting a new Social Studies curriculum to be implemented in the 2022-2023 school year.\u00a0MACL students also learn about the rich history and customs of China in an effort to develop insight and understanding of this culture as compared to their own.<\/p>\n<h2>Physical Education\/Health<\/h2>\n<p>All students attend Physical Education class weekly.\u00a0Students participate in fitness and health activities and learn about team-building and personal health.<\/p>\n<h2>Technology<\/h2>\n<p>We recognize technology skills are key to success in contemporary society. MACL supplies one-to-one chromebooks for students both at school and home.\u00a0 Smartboards, projectors, and document cameras are used to further enhance students&#8217; exposure to the communications systems and technologies of the 21st century.<\/p>\n<h2>Special Education<\/h2>\n<p>MACL serves the multi-categorical (mild, moderate and comprehensive) special education needs of children with cognitive disabilities, specific learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, other health impairments and speech and language needs. In accordance with their IEP requirements, all special education students are taught with regular education students in a Least Restrictive Environment. Our special education teacher consults regularly with classroom teachers to provide a true inclusion setting and appropriate instruction as specified in each student\u2019s IEP.<\/p>\n<h2>Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-10111 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/mpsschoolwebsi.wpenginepowered.com\/macl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/10\/pbis-logo-300x113.png\" alt=\"PBIS logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/k12.mps.school\/macl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/10\/pbis-logo-300x113.png 300w, https:\/\/k12.mps.school\/macl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/10\/pbis-logo.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>PBIS\u00a0is a joint effort between Milwaukee Public Schools\u00a0Office of Family Services and the Milwaukee Teachers\u2019 Education Association to effectively reduce classroom disruptions and student suspensions through a school-wide systematic tiered-intervention approach.
