{"id":29,"date":"2014-04-08T16:39:25","date_gmt":"2014-04-08T16:39:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www5.milwaukee.k12.wi.us\/school\/barton\/?page_id=29"},"modified":"2025-11-10T16:01:25","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T16:01:25","slug":"programs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/k12.mps.school\/barton\/programs\/","title":{"rendered":"Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Interfaith RSVP Tutoring<\/h2>\n<p>This program is a partnership between\u00a0RSVP\u00a0and Milwaukee Public Schools.\u00a0 It is a volunteer driven tutoring program designed to improve the academic performance of MPS students. \u00a0Volunteers\u00a0work one-on-one or in small groups with local students as they strive to improve their math and\/or reading skills.<\/p>\n<h2>Junior Achievement of Wisconsin<\/h2>\n<p>We have a strong partnership with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wisconsin.ja.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Junior Achievement of Wisconsin<\/a>\u00a0program, which inspires and prepares young people to succeed in a global economy. The mission of this program is to ensure that every child in the state has an opportunity to obtain an understanding of the free enterprise system. Lessons are organized according to the MPS Social Studies curriculum. The Junior Achievement curriculum is first implemented in K5 classrooms and\u00a0continues through eighth grade.<\/p>\n<h2>Milwaukee Art Museum Junior Docent Program<\/h2>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>For more than thirty-five years, the\u00a0Milwaukee Art Museum Junior Docent School Program\u00a0has introduced elementary school students to the vocabulary, elements, and history of art while developing critical thinking skills. \u00a0Grade 3, 4 and 5 students visit the art museum nine times, contextualizing art into their life. After a culminating project presented to their peers and family, they become official Junior Docents!<\/p>\n<h2>Milwaukee County Zoo Animal Ambassadors<\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>Through the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.milwaukeezoo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Milwaukee County Zoo<\/a>\u2019s Animal Ambassadors Program, students in grades 2, 3 and 4 are given the opportunity to learn about animals, their habitats and how to protect endangered species through zoo visits and classroom activities. \u00a0At the end of the program, the fourth graders participate in an Animal Ambassador graduation ceremony.<\/p>\n<h2>Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)<\/h2>\n<p>is a joint effort between Milwaukee Public Schools\u00a0Office of Family Services and the Milwaukee Teachers\u2019 Education Association to effectively reduce classroom disruptions and student suspensions through a school-wide systematic tiered-intervention approach. Data shows that schools that implement PBIS with fidelity see decreases in disruptions and suspensions and increases in student achievement. Barton is a 2012 PBIS School of Distinction.<\/p>\n<h2>Achievement Gap Reduction (AGR) Program<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/dpi.wi.gov\/sage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AGR Program<\/a> requires a participating school to create performance objectives, including reducing the achievement gap between low\u2212income students in that school and students in the same grade and subject statewide.<\/p>\n<h2>Camp Minikani<\/h2>\n<p>Students in grades 4-6 spend three days and two nights at camp immersed in nature.
